Link: SXSW Big Star gig turns into Alex Chilton wake →

“Fuck.”

That was Evan Dando’s one-word greeting as he took the stage Saturday night in Austin, Texas. He wasn’t supposed to be here, not in this capacity at least.

Big Star leader Alex Chilton died suddenly last Wednesday, three days before his band was set to play SXSW in Austin. Although the 59-year-old Chilton had toured and recorded intermittently under the Big Star banner with founder member Jody Stephens and latter-day players Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow (as pictured below), the Saturday show would have marked the first time Chilton and Stephens had played with bassist and co-founder Andy Hummel since 1974.

Pitchfork was in Austin Saturday night, and Ryan Dombal reports on what went ahn. Here’s a link, with setlist.

The New York Times ran a thoughtful op-ed from Chilton acoloyte, Replacements singer Paul Westerberg. You can click through here.
